Overview
The position of an assistant teacher is an important role in the early childhood environment as teaching is a team effort.
The assistant teacher will work alongside the lead teacher to implement a variety of daily activities which include observing, supervising, and education children, organizational duties, and optimizing the learning and play environment while also meeting the childcare health and safety standards.
An assistant teacher must be warm, sensitive, and a mature individual who relates well to children and adults and continues to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ.
Job Responsibilities for the Classroom include, but are not limited to the following:
Demonstrate Christian love to children, families, and other staff members.
Assist the lead teacher with curriculum development (lesson plan) that is age appropriate for the children in the classroom.
Assist the lead teacher in implementing activities on the lesson plan and following the daily schedule.
Assist the lead teacher in observing and assessing children’s behavior and progress.
Assist and engage with the children throughout the day.
Assist children with self-help skills.
Assistant Teachers have primary bathroom responsibilities.
Maintain awareness of each child’s progress in toilet training.
Inform parents of need when diaper supply is low.
Be vigilant about hand washing and good bathroom habits.
Follow and implement health, safety, and sanitation procedures throughout the day.
Enforce health and safety practices by:
Intervening when a child’s activity may result in injury.
Following procedures to safeguard the health and safety of children – hand washing, sanitation of toys and equipment, playground safety rules, and rules regarding the use of supplies and equipment.
Being knowledgeable about emergency procedures.
Reporting any suspicions of child abuse to the Preschool Director.
Keep up with room cleanliness by sweeping the floor after snack, lunch, and craft times as needed.
Disinfect table surfaces.
Maintain regulatory compliance.
Expectations
Arrive and sign-in by 9:00 a.
m.
Workday is over after the children leave and the classroom has been restored to a clean and tidy condition.
Attend staff training events as required by the director.
Attend monthly staff meetings as required by the director.
Follow the directions and requests by both the classroom teacher and the director.
Collaborate with other teachers, instructors, and staff members to create an optimal learning and care environment.
Be engaged at all times in activities relative to the children in the classroom and their day.
Complete at least 15 hours of personal development training annually and implement what you have learned back in the classroom.
Update TB skin test every two years.
Complete a professional development plan with the director annually.
Compete a staff evaluation with the director annually.
Complete CPR/First Aid Training every two years (if required by Director).
Complete the 1.
5 hours Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma Training in the first year of hire and every 5 years after initial hire date.
Complete 6 hours of Orientation in the first 90 days of hire.
Follow and implement all center policies and procedures daily.
All other responsibilities assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proof of high school degree/GED/Commonwealth Child Care Credential (CCCC).
Complete the National Background Check Program for Kentucky and any out of state background checks.
Ability to develop rapport with children, parents, and co-workers.
Ability to conform to an established work schedule.
Ability to understand and follow instructions precisely.
Must be willing to work in team environment, share ideas and be open to other’s ideas, and willing to compromise.

Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to:
Lift up to 40 lbs.
Repetitive bending, stretching, and stooping
Climb up and down stairs
Have mobility required to ensure the safety of the children
Work with children on the floor
Work outdoors in any variety of weather
Fully capable to have visually or hearing capabilities consistent with licensing safety requirements
Perform light duty cleaning
Teacher may encounter children who are ill and/or contagious and must take precautions to ensure the health and safety of all children, parents, staff and themselves.
