Xavier University seeks applicants to fill the new position of Data Services Librarian.
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Public Services, the successful candidate for this full-time position (37.
5 hours/week) will develop and launch a data literacy program to provide consultative and instructional library services that advance students’ ability to discover, analyze, visualize, and use data effectively.
The position will support student needs for finding, managing, interpreting and incorporating data into their research.
Services will include data discovery, curation (publication, visualization, storage, etc.
), and data management (citation management, ethical use, digital accessibility, etc.
) to assist student research, scholarship, and data literacy.
This position will collaborate with University librarians to integrate data visualization and analysis tools and technologies into library services and create relevant resources to support data in the curriculum.
Candidate should be an energetic self-starter with an entrepreneurial mindset in offering innovative and collaborative approaches to identify, promote, and encourage research support through data-related activities.
Recent MLS graduates with relevant interest and experience are encouraged to apply.
Essential Responsibilities:
Emphasize student engagement with data literacy through consultations and instruction sessions
Collaborate with faculty to promote use of data in student assignments, research, and scholarship
Provide expertise for data discovery, including in existing library resources, repositories, and data clearinghouses
Provide data management and data visualization skills to both undergraduates and graduate students
Develop and initiate programming and outreach related to data services including workshops and presentations
Research, assess, and recommend data-related tools and products for consideration and potential purchase
Manage and keep current the library’s Data Dashboard
Provide data support for internal library reports, surveys and assessment
Serve as liaison to multiple academic departments in support of information literacy and use of all library resources and services
Participate in the library’s provision of effective public services including reference, instruction, and liaison responsibilities
Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution
Demonstrated experience with using and assisting with research data
Understanding of research data lifecycle and research processes in a variety of disciplines
Knowledge of statistical methods
Experience with data preparation, organization, and visualization methodologies and tools
Ability to work both collaboratively and independently with proven organization and communication skills in a service–oriented role
Ability to understand and articulate complex work in everyday language
Self-starter with a strong attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to manage projects and meet established deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working as a professional librarian in an academic library
STEM or Business-Analytics-related undergraduate degree
Understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Familiarity with bepress Digital Commons
Awareness of funding agencies’ requirements for data management
Knowledge of Open Access and Open Educational Resources
