*POSITION TITLE:* Special Education Teacher
*RESPONSIBLE TO*: Regional School Programs Principal
*QUALIFICATIONS/CERTIFICATION(S):*
* Kentucky Teaching Certificate and LBD Certification
* Competence in subject area.
Ability and interest in teaching children and willingness to take suggestions.
*JOB GOALS: *As a primary function, the classroom teacher shall demonstrate competence in the following areas: * Classroom instruction * Classroom management * Classroom supervision * Counseling * Contact with parents * Maintain professionalism *PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:* *Instruction* * Plan for delivery of the lesson relative to objectives found in the Kentucky Program of Studies and Core Content for Assessment.
A program of study should, as much as is possible, meet the individual needs, interests and the abilities of the students.
* Provide adequate learning experiences in the subjects taught to all the students assigned to his/her room.
* Actively teach good study habits.
* Assist students in improving problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
* Monitor and check student progress toward objectives.
* Individualize instruction to meet the needs of the students.
Guides the learning process through the establishment of curriculum goals and develops clear objectives to meet the goals.
* Participate in the continuous assessment, development, and improvement of the curriculum.
* Select materials and supplies which are appropriate to the needs of the needs of the students and the goals and objectives of the educational program.
* Employs a variety of instructional best practices and instructional media/technology consistent with the needs and capabilities of the students.
* Teach the Kentucky Program of Studies and content identified by the building level curriculum committee.
* Use current data to improve and inform instruction.
* Continually provide positive reinforcement to all students to build their self- concept.
*Management* * Work cooperatively with all school personnel.
* Develop a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
* Encourage and promote the student's adaptation to and understanding of the need for rules.
* Maintain accurate, complete and correct records and their confidentiality as required by law, NKCES board policy and administrative regulation.
* Provide an attractive, safe and comfortable classroom.
* Coordinate planning and instructional activities for effective time management.
* Cooperate in maintaining, caring, and make an inventory for all materials, equipment, and property.
* Records, post, and notify parents of grades for the mid-nine weeks, nine weeks, semester, and the year.
*Supervision* * Be on time for assigned duties including before and after school.
* Be alert to any potential problems and take necessary actions to avert them.
* Report any problems which cannot be handled adequately to the principal.
* Develop and submit classroom discipline plan and procedures for site administrator’s approval.
Once approved, ensure that the plan and procedures are followed.
* Cooperate with the principal and staff in supervision of all students in their movement about the school premises.
* Administer standardized tests/district tests.
* Collect and monitor relevant behavioral and IEP data.
Participate in the ARC process including, writing IEP goals and objectives, coordinating and attending meetings.
* Serve on building committees.
* Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for paraprofessional(s) and volunteers and cooperatively with principal, evaluates their job performance.
*Counseling* * Maintain good rapport with students.
* Provide direct instruction in skills unique to a child or youth with emotional behavioral disorders including social skills training.
* Assist and direct students with problems concerning school work and personal or social relationships to include referrals to building intervention team or principal.
* Maintain student records for each of your students.
Contents should include parent contacts, discipline problems, areas of achievement, etc.
* Develop and implement behavior management strategies to include preventative interventions, contracts, point systems, and/or behavior management plans.
*Contact with Parents* * Keep the best interest of the child in mind when conferring with parents.
* Endeavor to improve communications between school and home by sending parents letters and notes, telephone calls, and attending as many activities and meetings as possible involving students and/or parents, as deemed necessary by the principal.
*Professionalism* * Maintain careful observance of school, administrative, and board policy.
* Work cooperatively with all school personnel.
* Seek continuous professional growth and meet district staff development requirements.
* Maintain an image worthy of the code of ethics of the teaching profession.
* Other needs, duties, or concerns deemed necessary by the principal.
*TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT*: 10 Month year, 185 days *SALARY*: Salary based on rank and experience in accordance with NKCES salary schedule.
*EVALUATION*: Annual evaluation in accordance with performance of job description and NKCES policies and procedures.
