00/hourly Status: Part-Time Department: Aquatics Reports to: Aquatics Director/Coordinator Revision Date: 2/10/2023 POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Aquatics Director (or Aquatics Coordinator) and in accordance with the Christian mission and purpose of the Great Miami Valley YMCA Association, the Swim Instructor is responsible for providing safe and planned instructional swim lessons for all facility members and program participants while ensuring a safe environment for all participants.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1.
Reports 10 minutes prior to the start of scheduled shifts, to prepare materials/equipment for class.
2.
Maintains all instructional equipment, including proper usage and storage of class materials.
3.
Conduct classes in accordance with the GMVY Swim Lesson v6 Program.
4.
Understand and use lesson plans to accommodate each level of swim lessons.
5.
Recognizes individual differences, and adjusts teaching strategies as needed for the success of all students in the swim lesson program.
6.
Maximize swimmer participation in every class period and constructively utilize allotted class time.
7.
Provide a positive learning experience for all swimmers through the use of sound instructional strategies and techniques.
8.
Ability to teach various levels of lessons at any time if needed.
9.
Know and understand emergency procedures; be prepared to act on them if necessary.
10.
Communicate student progress to swimmers and/or families throughout each session of lessons.
11.
Maintains current certifications at all times.
12.
Attends all required trainings, in-service meetings, and branch meetings as required.
13.
Provides excellent member experiences to all participants and members through classes and events.
14.
Supports all branch and association-wide membership retention and engagement initiatives.
15.
Actively supports membership sales initiatives.
16.
Supports and promotes annual campaigns efforts within branch and across association.
17.
Organizes special events for participants and families.
18.
Covers all schedules shifts and/or finds substitute coverage for 100% of scheduled shifts.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have current CPR for the Professional rescuer (BLS), Oxygen and First Aid certifications.
YMCA Swim Lesson v6 Training required within 90 days of employment.
Competition of Principles of Youth Development (e-learning), YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor v6: Orientation (e-learning) YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor v6: Observe & Communicate (e-learning) and YMCA Swim Instructor Certification.
Staff that are not 16 at the time of hire (or not yet 16 but are currently teaching swim lessons), will need to be certified within 90 days once they turn 16.
Recertification every two years will be re-taking the full class or recertifying with Advanced Swimming Techniques or Advanced Teaching Techniques.
Must attend at least one, seven-week session of training with an experienced instructor before teaching independently (shadowing).
Must have experience in water safety.
Must have knowledge of teaching basic swimming strokes to all levels, and have the ability to demonstrate each skill effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, volunteers, members, and participants is essential.
Must promote the YMCA mission and apply core values, including customer service, meeting quality standards for service, and a maintaining safe environment for the enjoyment of all.
Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
Physical ability to respond to children quickly in emergency: regular kneeling, bending, or sitting.
Must be able to handle multiple tasks, work heavily with families and children.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
Physically perform all skills required of a swim instructor.
Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area(s) of responsibility.
