To advise undergraduate majors and minors in the department of Psychological Science.
Primary Responsibilities
Advise majors and minors in Psychological Science, including new students, current majors, transfer students, as well as potential students.
Assist in planning and implementation of academic advising.
Assist students in developing a clear path to reach their educational and career goals, including connecting the skills of the Psychology major with the needs of the job market.
Deal with placement, transfer, graduation and other degree-path issues and refer students to appropriate resources as needed.
Assist in short and long term schedule planning.
Working closely with the Department Chair, help develop and assist the department with program recruiting and retention activities such mentoring student groups and peer mentors.
Collaborate with the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Center and NKU offices such as Admissions, Graduate Programs, New Student Orientation, Adult & Transfer Center, Student Success Hub, recruitment and retention efforts and others as needed.
Plan, present and assist with the Department of Psychological Science recruiting efforts including Norse Days, Black and Gold Days, and other department and university recruitment efforts.
Maintain documentation of appointments, advising and related activities.
Generate and disseminate student reports using the university information systems.
Serve on department, college, and NKU committees as appropriate to the duties/responsibilities of the position.
Become a Master Advisor.
Attend regular trainings, conferences and educational events to stay current on NKU policies and best practices in academic advising.
Transitioning new students into the Psychological Science program.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree strongly preferred
2 years of related experience required preferably advising undergraduate university students
Proficiency with office software (Excel, PowerPoint, Access); ability to learn complex software systems (e.
g.
SAP, EAB Navigate, and Perceptive Content) quickly.
Ability to learn, understand, and articulate the requirements, culture, and skills developed in the Psychology major.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and professionalism; strong interpersonal communication skills.
Strong organizational and collaborative skills and ability to deal successfully with diverse populations.
Must be able to handle difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.
